Getting Audacity

Audacity logo

Audacity is used in the Department of Education in the following contexts...

If you do not already have audacity installed for this workshop, you will probably be able to use the portable version. The typical install for portable audacity is also available from: http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/audacity_portable.

You will also need a copy of "lame" which allows you to make mp3 files. (Lame cannot be included in Audacity normally as mp3 is a proprietary (copyrighted) format - to avoid such issues save as ogg, but that is not playable on many DET computers). Save Lame in the Audacity/lame folder - see later.

The advantage of portable applications:

Portable versions of software can be run on any computer, unless an administrator specifically stops them.

The advantage of Open Source Software:

Open Source means that it is not owned by one individual, but is owned by the community. The community will continue to improve it as we (the community) see is best for its improvement. If you want it better, say so, and someone may do it. You also have the confidence that the community will make the software safe and useful. Usually Open Source software is also cost free.

Want a full installation?

If you really want to install it on a computer the full installation file is available from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
